Earning Political Currency! MLM vs Ponzi

Word of Mouth Marketing is not only the oldest method of Concept Selling, but also the most effective even today, despite digital revolution. People get the info, but trust is transferred only after their peers approve it. May be digitally. Multi-Level-Marketing has been the most widely tool used and hence, highly improvised through time.

Brand Building doesn't happen without Word of Mouth Marketing !

Multi Level Marketing (MLM)

In MLM a Product, Concept or Service is sold to few people, who in turn sell it to few more people each. The Commission is earned by sellers all the way to the top. It is also known as Network Marketing, Pyramid Sales or Referral Marketing.

It takes Max 7 levels of Contacts to reach anyone on this Planet !

As shown, the Guy in Red convinces 3 people in Blue to buy a particular product or a service. The Blue Guys in turn convince 3 people each, resulting in 9 Grey people. As per the concept, for every sale done by a Grey guy, the rewards are given to the Blue guy who sold it to him and also to the Red Guy. Meaning the Red guy gets a small commission every time any of the 9 Grey sell & also from sales of any Blue guy.

Deploying MLM in Politics

Most political parties are born through Word of Mouth Marketing using MLM. They may sell different Concepts like Congress sold Independence, BJP - Hindutva / Nationalism / Ram-Mandir, AAP sells concept of Swaraj through Anti-Corruption plank. The methodology remains the same, Broadcasting Promises using Word of Mouth Publicity.

As in MLM, few  Volunteers convince more Volunteers to join in spreading their ideology, who in turn add many more Volunteers, till they reach every Voter in that Region.They Get Paid as discussed in my earlier Blog Political Currency.

There may be layers of volunteers, who eventually reach Voters and convince them to elect leaders from their party. The Volunteers may be rewarded as District - Taluk - Panchayat - Village - Community Leaders. Each enjoying appropriate power and respect from the people of their region.

Conditions for MLM to work

As in every Sales Cycle, here too there are Two Components, Sellers & Consumers.

Sellers are the Leaders & Volunteers who Propagate Party Ideology & its Promises till consumers. The Chain of command follows from top leadership till the Volunteer who interacts with Voters. There should be No communication gap between them, either in terms of following commands (top - bottom) or transfer of voter feed-backs (bottom - top).

Consumers are the Voters who benefit from Party Ideology & its Promises. They seek Trust of Leaders & Volunteers before lending their support. Breach of Trust in Ideology or Promises leads to Cascading Negative Effects.

Strength of a Chain is equal to strength of its Weakest Link !

An Extremely important point to note here is that MLM is a Double Edged Sword. As in a Pipe, both good & bad info flows in either direction. Any Blockage or Leakage breaks the MLM cycle.

Advantages of MLM

If executed sincerely, it is an extremely effective tool for propagating a Concept to millions of people in shortest Possible time. Almost All Revolutions have spread using MLM model of Word of Mouth Propagation.

Few Notable Advantages :
  • Fastest method of reaching out to maximum people, through Existing Contacts.
  • Convincing becomes easy, as it rides on already established relationships.
  • Once accepted, Customer Loyalty is unbreakable by competitors.
  • Volunteers remain Loyal, as rewards flow without much efforts.
  • New Promises get Broadcasted at Lightning Speed, within Established Chain.
Clinks in the Armour

As in the Animal Kingdom, there are two types of people in any organization, Predators & Parasites.

Predators are the go-getters who use their own strength (Kinetic Energy) to get things done. They are the Currency Earners for the Party who motivate fellow Volunteers to perform.

Parasites typically live on others achievements. They survive on work done by their Colleagues or Team mates and live on Currency Distributed by the Party. They boast about Past Performance (dubious) & Position (Potential Energy) for their existence. Like Parasites, their Excretion hurts the party more than their Consumption.

Survival of any Party depends on how Quickly it Finds & Flushes Parasites !

Ponzi Schemes

Charles Ponzi ran a MLM scam in 1920 by duping Investors using fraudulent methods. Schemes are called Ponzi, when people are lured to invest in a concept that doesn't have proper profitability mechanism. Such organization run out of currency sooner than later & investors get duped.

Most Multi-Level Marketing turn Ponzi, when Parasites out-number Predators !

When MLM turns Ponzi

When the number of Currency Earners get out numbered by non-performing Leaders, the party gets defunct. Most Non-Performers promote like minded people to hide their wrong doings, adding to the speed of decline.

Symptoms of MLM turning Ponzi

As in the case of Automobiles, Hiccups during normal running is the time to examine the Selling Machine. When Excuses start pouring, time for a thorough checkup !

Sensing Trouble :
  • The Earning of Political Currency Declines or Stops growing
  • Number of Volunteers or Supporters or both start Shrinking
  • Hiccups or Resistance in following Chain of Commands
  • Customer (Voter) response declines or feedback stops coming
  • In-fighting, Blame-Game, Groupism are signs of unrest among Volunteers
Recognizing Parasites

As is normally the case, Parasites stay dormant, typically blending with their surroundings. However, they can be easily spotted by their passiveness. Some times we do find active parasites, but their activity is limited to camouflage their non-performance.

Spotting Parasites :
  • Normally Silent in the meetings, or Yes Men
  • Asking queries that are beneficial to Individuals than the party, is a sure give away
  • Normally Hang around with other Parasites, exchanging latest blood sucking mechanisms
  • Giving Excuses or Promises than Reporting Performances
  • Defending or Promoting other Parasites, sometimes even Attacking Performers
Effects of MLM turning Ponzi

The most damaging effect of MLM turning Ponzi is Loss of Credibility. When Voters stop respecting Volunteers or Volunteers resist following Commands, the decline of the Party Begins. MLM to Ponzi is like an Aircraft in Tail-spin, extremely difficult to salvage even by experienced Pilots !

Effects of Ponzi :
  • Goodwill Harvesting campaigns start Failing due to Poor Response
  • Consumers (Voters) start Questing the Motive, instead of Supporting
  • Performers get discouraged, Parasites start Panicking
  • Volunteer Response reduces Drastically, Excuses get Creative
  • Morale of the Organization takes a beating, Innovations & Initiatives Stop
After-Effects of Ponzi

As the news of Predators getting out-numbered spreads, Parasites get panicked. Instead of working to save the organization, they rush to Protect Themselves. They typically Gang-up against Performers to Plunder whatever Currency that remains. They perform like the Looters as explained there.

After Effects of Ponzi :
  • The First & Foremost after-effect is Party gets Split into two or more Groups
  • Parasites start Operation Cover-up, with High Visibility Activities, mostly Non-Productive
  • Performers Stop Working, as they do not see any Rewards coming their way
  • Consumers (Voters) get Vary after seeing change in Attitude or Leaders with Dubious Characters
  • An MLM Starts Among Voters, Spreading Negative Information about the Party
Bad News Travels Faster than Good News !

The After-effects devastate Morale of Volunteers & Leaders in the Party and Destroys Credibility of the Party amongst People. While the Leaders get into the Blame-Game, the Volunteers start playing Pahle-Aap to correct themselves. Turn-around Looks Bleak from all Angles !

Turning Ponzi into MLM again

Every M&A expert looks for Companies / Products gone Ponzi with possibility of a Profitable Turn-Around. It is possible, has been done umpteen times, but the timing has to be perfect. Delay reduces chances of Turn-Aound.

Painful but Possible :
  • First thing First, Change of Management. New Team with Fresh Start
  • Parasites should be neutralized, at-least stripped of Leadership Positions
  • Take Performers in to confidence, Reward them with Challenging Responsibilities & Realistic Targets
  • Inform Voters about the change in Management, with Realistic Reasoning and Clear Short-Term Deliverables
  • Start a new MLM Cycle, taking Leaders, Volunteers and Voters along for Quick Recovery

It may look too cumbersome to go through the pains, but it is easier to salvage an existing Party than build a new one from scratch, unless Top Leaders have spent too much time Twiddling their Thumbs.

As Hitler Says in "Main Kampf", there are three types of people in every Struggle. The Fighters, the Hedgers and Traitors. In the Struggle to keep the Party Growing, all you need to do is Empower the Fighters, Convince the Hedgers about Victory and Ensure Traitors Cross the Border.

The Situation need not always be about the Whole Party, this can be used to Salvage individual Units across a Region.

Biharis made them Budibak

Everyone was made Budibak. Modi, Media & Mind Readers all were proved Budibak. How could they under-estimate Bihari Intelligence, that too from a Land that gave Gyan to even Lord Buddha.

Their predictions were as random as the Bihari they surveyed. Did they really speak to the guy riding a buffalo while listening to Bhojpuri Gaana or the number crunching was done in AC rooms in Delhi? Even Chanakya had to apologize for horrible predictions, so did Pranab Roy of NDTV. Did they misjudge Strategies or Tactics?

While their Focus was totally on the Cow, Dead or Alive, they forgot that different parts of India look at the same cow differently. While a Haryanvi loves the Milk, a Punjabi makes Lassi, Bihari carries Dahi in Gunny Sacks, a Marwadi bottles Desi Ghee, UPwala boils to Khova and a Bong splits it to Chhena. So the Makkhan loving Gujarati forgot that even Lord Krishna was chased away by Jarasandh, the king of Magadh.

Strategy depends on Tactics

Generals believe that wars are won by excellent strategies, but every warrior knows that it’s the Tactics that make or break strategies. Strategies look nice on paper, but once the soldier comes face to face, its execution that matters. How could Modi forget this point that worked so well in LS elections, when “Bharat Nirman” flopped, in spite of thousands of crores spent by the party in power?

Promises work only when people believe them

This was repeated, in reverse, by a Haryanvi snatching away Delhi, in spite of Govt. Might & Media Masala. The people this time believed Arvind Kajriwal, regardless of what was promised by the Prime Minister.

Looks like all the “Plans” hatched by Teja’s henchmen, flopped in taming Bihari “Paplu-Taplu”. The Vasco-de-Gama ki Gun too didn’t fire.

Misunderstanding Bihari Psyche

Plan hi Galat Tha”. Progress means different things to different people. While Guajarati are known to adopt the world culture and progress to them means more Dhandha. The Bihari loves his Traditions and Jaat more than anything else in this world. They live a similar lifestyle, regardless of where they are.

While both love their culture, it is different. It’s alright in Gujarat to mingle with people of different castes as long as they are from same class (cash). In Bihar the mingling happens totally caste wise, class is mostly ignored.

So when Modi goes and promises Money & Material, the Bihari wants to know which Caste will get how much. The focus is always on how much share (not cash) is given to people of his Caste. You may call it backwardness, but that’s how priorities get decided. Tradition followed by their caste is sacrosanct. In north India the love for their tradition increases as ganga flows, increasing from Haridwar, highest near Kolkotta.

They didn’t believe a Gujarati to do justice to their way of Progress, which Lalu utilized to the Hilt.

Promises looked False

It was a Complete Branding Blunder by Modi & co. He should have competed with Vikas Purush Nitish on just that, Vikas. When he had already won the Vikas fight in LS Elections, why did he switch over to his Jaat. Why didn’t his brand managers correct him, or did he see the Dalits deserting Manjhi & moving to Lalu?

Once he switched over to Jaat, his own lack of confidence in brand Vikas got dented. People believed track record of Nitish to provide Vikas and promises of Modi, seemed yet another Jhoomla.

That is where Lalu, the epitome of Jaat Politics, got an upper hand. With People believing him to be true to his Brand, they trusted whatever he said. He too was careful not to touch Brand Vikas by insisting on Nitish as CM.

Chokarings

That is how Buffalos in Purvanchal talk to everyone. Everyone there understands what a buffalo is trying to say “Kahe Chokarat Ba”.  

Every mass communicator understands that you need to grab the brain, before putting sense into it. Modi failed to grab the brains of Biharis, who understand what even a buffalo tries to say. You can’t beat Lalu, that too in Bihar, to attract attention of the masses. While Modi had large Rallies, Lalu had 250 small ones, discussing Local Issues in a lingo that even Buffalos there understood. And Trusted.

Modi’s Rallies focused more on Cows (both Dead & Alive) in a land where Buffalos are preferred. The Curds of Cow’s milk is not as thick and can’t be carried in Gunny Sacks. Like a Professional DJ, he went on raising Financial Package prompting the crowd, 50,000 Karoon, 60,000 KaroonPoore 1.25 Lakh Karod Diya !  “Bhaowkaal ba”.  No one trusted the funds to comeGaana hi bekaar hai, Volume kahe badha rahe ho”.

Besuri Qawwali

Brand managers insist that everyone in an organization follows symmetry else the message gets diluted. While Bihari Brothers struck to their specialties, team Modi didn’t clap in tandem. Everyone was singing different song, some on Cows, few on its dead body, some on reservation and others on development. BJP invited Upper Caste, while Manjhi called the Mahadalits, to the same venue. No one was happy.

Both Bade Miyan & Chote Miyan stuck to their roles, while Rahul’s crooning was completely ignored. That made Biharis believe to get their Way of Vikas, caste-wise.

Follow Traditions

Promises are useless if people don’t believe you. Winning Trust is paramount to winning hearts. People from different regions use different formula to check the trustworthiness.  

While Delhi trusts Known contacts only, Mumbaikar goes on face value. Chennai depends on well established brands, Bengaluru seeks Latest Version. Marwadis hate Showoffs, Punjabis love them. Gujjus make quick decisions, while Bongs take their own time. Punjabis & Telugus prefer settling Abroad, Eastern Indians always have one leg in their native place.

An organization based in Delhi, should understand Bengalureans and their point of view of using cutting edge technology. Mumbaikar should expect a Hyderabadi to take an hour when he says 20 minutes; also verify his change of plan from time to time. Don’t go on Tamilian attire, he has better priorities.

Bihari Gyan

Brand Modi got eroded, thanks due to bad co-ordination & failure to understand what Biharis want. Here are a few points every political party needs to learn:

·         Understand the Psyche.  Allow local leaders to lead or at least take their suggestions seriously
·         Stop In fighting.  Follow Political Currency formula to reduce power grabbing disputes
·         Put the Best foot forward.  Put Recognized, Acceptable & Credible Faces forward
·         Don’t be a Teja.  Don’t depend on Loyal people, let Performers drive  the campaign
·         Maintain Brand Image. It’s alright to change course mid-way but stick to your core competency

So it’s a combination of Understanding the Psyche & selecting Disciplined Performers is what is needed to win Elections. Every organization should have leaders who can do both.

Political Currency

Every Political Party cherishes a dream of acquiring Maximum support of People that can later be converted into Votes. They aspire to Serves people, in return of their support during elections.


Many Parties have grown from nowhere, tasted success thanks to massive support from people and then vanished into oblivion. History is littered with Astounding Successes followed by Dismal Failures, often following similar pattern of getting sick, never to recover, ever. May it be Janata Party, Flavors of Communists or Regional Parties like BSP, RJD, JD(s)… the list is long.


They would have survived, had they Managed Political Currency, the Goodwill of the people. Earning the Currency is not sufficient; it should also be distributed judiciously. The downfall starts as soon as a party fails to distribute hard earned Currency amongst its own people.

Earning the Currency

The economy of goodwill starts with Party Karyakartas reaching out to people & solving their problems. Every Heart won goes into the Party Kitty, with the Karyakarta getting recognized as a Good Samaritan, Paropakari. He gets respect from the people and recognition within the party as capable of winning hearts.

The success of getting Respect from both People & Collogues makes him continue the good work and also rope in many more Karyakartas for similar earning of Political Currency. They help & encourage each other in accumulating Currencies, thereby increasing happiness of the people along with building credibility of the party.

If all goes well, the party starts similar Goodwill Harvesting Campaigns across the region for acquiring more & more Political Currency that can get converted into Votes at a later date.

Goodwill can also be earned through Paying Cash to people or Karyakartas, but the complexities involved, needs a Separate Discussion.

Currency Dynamics

As mentioned earlier, the Currency has two components, People’s Goodwill & Party’s Recognition. A Karyakarta strives for both as they are interdependent in the form of Visibility.

Man does what his society rewards him for. This is true across the globe & is the main reason why Karyakartas spend their time & money. Being Mr. Popular also has multiplication effect, when his near & dear ones start getting respect from the people he serves. It resonates with Currency getting distributed to more & more family & friends, who in turn share it with him in terms of love & respect.

Recognition from the Party comes mostly in the form of rewarding Leadership Positions.  This not only encourages him to win more hearts, but also gives him visibility amongst people. This Visibility results in earning Currency even from people he is yet to serve, giving him a double bonanza.

Currency Distribution

The greatest challenge a party faces, is distributing this Currency Judiciously amongst its Karyakartas. They should carefully manage proportionate rewards to the deserving, with transparent mechanism of valuation and sincere execution of rewarding procedure.

People Quit Managers, not Companies. It should not only have a universally agreeable rewarding procedure, but also a way to manage aspirations & perceptions of its Karyakartas at all levels.

Mismatch in Earning Currency & Getting rewarded, results in disheartened Karyakartas. Apart from affecting his contributions, it reduces earnings of others too. Goodwill Harvesting Campaigns start failing, as more & more Karyakartas get affected, resulting in Replacement of their Leader.

Happiness Doubles with Sharing, Sorrow Halves, but Confusion, just Xeroxes.

Selection of new Leader leads to Bloodshed, as mismanaged distribution is perceived as breach of trust by rewarding authorities. Many questions are raised about the selection process leading to questioning of the rewarding procedures & its execution. The team gets divided into two groups, one supporting the new leader and the other sympathizing with the old one. 

To err is human. Not correcting is stupidity.  Committing Mistakes knowingly is Evil.

The obvious solution is sitting across the table with all stake holders and put sincere efforts to sort things out. That’s when the Grievance Cell gets into picture. They should however, have absolute powers to assemble all concerned and work without bias of any sort.

A good mechanism of Rewarding Karyakartas in proportion of their Efforts & Earnings goes a long way in building a Party that can continuously win hearts and expand its Volunteer Base.

The Looters

Life is never fair. Crooks are everywhere, just that their number increases with opportunities. As Earnings grow, so do the chances of people using fraudulent means to get rewarded. Looting happens at multiple levels.

The most common form of looting is Emotional Corruption. Like a leader showering praises or giving undue opportunity to a particular Karyakarta. This amounts to Skewed Party Recognition, thereby creating doubts in the minds of sincere Karyakartas about earning calculations and growth prospects.

Giving Leadership position to undeserving, denies Visibility Opportunities to those deserving thereby affecting enthusiasm to earn. It also projects a wrong choice to the people, who start doubting Party Integrity, resulting in lower goodwill.

Treating Good & Bad equally, is Injustice to Good people.

Another form of looting happens when the entire team gets rewarded, including undeserving people. This reduces the enthusiasm of hard working Karyakartas who learn to find excuse, thereby reducing earnings of the entire team.

The most damaging is undeserving Successors, it can cause fatal blow to the prospects of a party. More Visible the position, more the damage caused. Both Karyakartas & people lose faith in a party with undeserving leader.

Even seasoned Leaders (Sonia, Lalu,  Gowda) gave leadership to undeserving children, with disastrous results. Higher the Position of looter, more damaging is it to Worker’s Morale and People’s Faith.

There is another breed of looters, the Infiltrators, people with good capability, but bad intentions. They mostly come from another party, just to get Leadership Positions. Apart from damaging party’s Culture & Morale, they are never interested in Earning Currency. Some are even planted by Political Opponents.

Crooks Breed Crooks.  Unless a party gets rid of Looters, the disease spreads like wild fire. Every Leader chooses his ilk, who then selects their own henchmen. Illogical distribution of Political Currency leads to spreading of Unhappiness along the chain of command. Hard working & Sincere desert the party, leaving it look like a body full of parasites.

Securing the Currency

Accountability avoids Disaster. Like any organization, Political Parties too have to keep accounts of its Earnings & Expenditure, the Political Currency Kind. Every Unit earned has to be judiciously Spent or Secured. The Chain of Command has to be defined, Budgets (Time & People) Allocated, Markets Demarked, Earnings Projected, Karyakartas Deployed, Discipline Maintained, Leakages Plugged, Brands Protected. Increasing Enthusiasm of Karyakarta and Maintaining it is the key to survival of any Party.

All boils down to Easily Understandable & Implementable Policies of Investments & Rewards. The Execution has to be Unbiased, with everyone given right to Appeal. A stitch in Time Saves Nine. An Unbiased Grievance Cell with time bound results can make or break Morale of Workers in any party.

Every Leader should lookout for Looters & Leakages at their levels. Looters are already defined.

Leakages are Opportunities Lost due to poor executions. Winking in the Dark never helps. Goodwill harvesting Campaigns should start with a People Awareness Program for maximizing effects of the event. The Campaign should be followed by Happenings & Achievements Blitz for getting Maximum Currency, even from those who couldn’t attend the Event.

Another form of leakage is Dead-Wood. The Ghost Leaders. Every organization has leaders who do not exist. They are either physically not present or add no value to their positions. Most get rewarded fraudulently or by giving false promises. They neither Earn nor allow others to Earn.

Few Golden Rules:
·         Define Rules. Uncertainty -> Panic -> Mistakes -> Disaster
·         Follow Discipline. Indiscipline -> Injustice -> Resentment -> Revenge
·         Lookout for Looters.  Insecurity -> Anxiety  -> Exodus of Karyakartas
·         Encourage Sincerity & Hard Work.  Justice -> Commitments -> Happy Earners
·         Maintain Positive Buzz. Enthusiasm -> Efficiency -> Achievements -> Explosive Growth

Maximum Currency Earnings

The Current Political Situation in India looks like the Shoe Salesmen who go to Africa. One can return saying no one wears shoes, while another sees a Huge Market Potential. At a time when the whole country is reeling due to Corruption, a Political Party that fights Corruption can Harvest Maximum Goodwill Currency. All it has to do is work relentlessly and keep vigil to avoid disasters.

Hope Karyakartas and Leaders of All political party that wants to work for the welfare of the citizens will follow their Raja-Dharma and earn Political Currency as rewards. It is this Political Currency, People’s Goodwill & Party’s Recognition that keeps Karyakartas in good Spirit.

As per an Internal Survey done in May,  around 80% off 5000 people,  want AAP to run BBMP. The surprising fact was people are more concerned about Improvements in Civic Conditions, than Politics in Delhi. Negative Publicity by few National TV Channels, didn't Matter to them.

They just want Corruption Free BBMP and expect AAP to give them.

Conditions Favoring AAP

General Perception of Voters about Traditional Parties is; they are totally corrupt. No changes in Living Conditions are expected from them. However AAP is perceived as Non-Corrupt and trusted to provide a Corruption Free BBMP, with better Living Conditions.

Bangalore has a Strong AAP Support base. Its Volunteers travel across the Nation, spending Time & Money in support of AAP Candidates. Volunteers of AAP Karnataka played a key role in Stunning 67/70 Delhi Win. Those unable to go, donate generously in every election.

Traditionally Bangalore has been a Start-up city adopting latest trends, like IT, Organized Retail &  Bio-Tech. People see AAP as Next Generation Party, with potential to Disrupt Current Political Landscape and transfer power in to the Hands of Bangaloreans. 

As Lovers of New Trends, people expect AAP to give Out of the Box Solutions for Bijli, Sadak, Pani & Garbage, that has been denied for years.

AAP brings Refreshing Changes

No Baggage of Caste, Class, Region or Religion. People find it refreshing to see a party that doesn't divide them on these parameters.

Palike will work for People. Not for Politicians / Babus. Born out of Anti-Corruption Movement, AAP is committed to provide Transparent Governance in BBMP.

People will decide. Not only Corporator. Swaraj has been the main Moto, where people are consulted in Jan Sabhas.
